A breaking-news graphic is five parts in a fixed arrangement: a red banner, an all-caps headline, a lower third, a ticker, and a channel bug. What makes a graphic read as breaking news
Every network uses the same five elements in roughly the same proportions. That consistency is the whole effect — viewers recognise the layout before they read a single word, which is why a template gets you most of the way there.

One rule matters more than the rest: contrast between the banner and everything else. If the red is muted or the headline is not the brightest thing on screen, the graphic reads as a lower third rather than as breaking news.

The headline field takes up to 30 characters, which is roughly four short words. That limit is deliberate: anything longer stops being readable when the camera punches in on a phone screen.
Breaking news intro vs lower third vs full front page
People search for a breaking news template wanting three quite different things. Pick the output first, because it decides which tool is worth opening.

The templates above make the first and third. For a lower third over your own footage you need an overlay with a transparent background, which is a job for an editor rather than a generator.
Make one in Canva
- Search "breaking news" in templates and filter to Video if you want motion rather than a still.
- Set the canvas to 1080 × 1920 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, or 1920 × 1080 for YouTube.
- Replace the placeholder headline. Keep it under six words, and set the type to all caps.
- Drag the banner to full width. Most Canva templates ship with a banner inset from the edges, which is the single most common giveaway.
- Add a ticker by drawing a thin rectangle across the bottom and animating it with the "Pan" effect.
- Export as MP4 for video, PNG for a still.
Realistic time: five to ten minutes, and you will be fighting the template rather than writing. Canva is the right choice when you need to match brand colours exactly.
Make one in CapCut
- Start a 9:16 project and drop in a solid colour clip as the background.
- Add a text layer, set it to a condensed bold face, all caps, and centre it in the upper third.
- Add a second text layer for the lower third and shrink it to about 40% of the headline size.
- Draw the banner with a solid colour clip scaled to roughly 10% of frame height, spanning the full width.
- Animate: "Zoom In" on the headline at 0.3 seconds, and a horizontal "Slide" on the ticker set to loop.
- Add a hard cut every 0.4 to 0.6 seconds if you want the montage effect rather than a single static card.
Realistic time: fifteen minutes for the first one, three minutes for every one after that once you save it as a draft. CapCut is worth it when you need the graphic to sit over your own footage.
Make one without an editor
If what you actually want is a finished clip rather than a project file, skip both. This is what our generator does:
- Type the headline. The layout, columns, body type and rules are generated around it.
- Pick a style and a cut speed. Faster cuts read as urgent, slower cuts read as authoritative.
- Export MP4 or GIF. The rendering happens in your browser, so there is no queue and no upload.
The trade-off is honest: you get a finished newspaper-style clip in about thirty seconds, but you cannot composite it over your own footage the way you can in CapCut. Pick by output, not by tool.
Writing text that sounds like breaking news
The graphic is half the job. Broadcast headlines follow a compressed grammar — present tense, no articles, active verbs — and copying that grammar does more for believability than any amount of design.

Two habits to copy from real chyrons: drop "the" and "a" wherever the sentence survives without them, and keep the verb in the present even for things that already happened. "Mayor resigns" reads as live; "Mayor has resigned" reads as a summary.

Broadcast news almost always uses a condensed grotesque for headlines and lower thirds — the family that Helvetica Condensed and Franklin Gothic belong to. Free stand-ins that hold up at small sizes are Oswald, Anton, Archivo Narrow and Libre Franklin.
Q2.How big should the red breaking news bar be?+
Full frame width, and 8 to 12 percent of frame height. On a 1080 by 1920 vertical video that is roughly 150 to 230 pixels tall. A banner that is inset from the edges is the most common thing that makes a homemade graphic look wrong.
Q3.Can I use a breaking news template commercially?+

Making one is fine as parody, celebration or promotion. Presenting it as a genuine broadcast is not — that can amount to defamation or impersonation depending on the content, and most platforms remove manipulated media that is passed off as real news.
